40 Burning Hot: A Week With The Fast Little Arcade

I didn't expect to keep coming back to 40 Burning Hot, but here we are a week later. It's a tap-and-swap arcade game where you clear glowing symbols before a warmth meter climbs out of control, and the loop is almost dangerously moreish. The genius is in the pacing — rounds are short enough that quitting feels silly when you're that close to a chain.

Mechanically it's about reading the board a half-second ahead. Once you stop staring at single matches and start seeing the bigger clusters, your scores jump. The game gives you little chain reactions as a reward, and those moments of a whole corner of the board lighting up at once are genuinely satisfying.

The controls are the quiet hero. Taps land exactly where you aim, there's no lag when the board is crowded, and I played most of it one-handed on a train without a single misfire. If the bright orange palette is too much before bed, the settings let you dim the effects, which I ended up doing.

Battery-wise it's a good citizen. After half an hour my phone barely warmed and the drain was small, which is more than I can say for a lot of flashy arcade games. If you want something to fill five minutes that somehow becomes twenty, this is an easy recommendation.
